Kingsville, TX - In a tightly contested Lone Star Conference game, the Dustdevils claimed a 5-1 victory over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas. The Dustdevils' pitching and timely hitting proved pivotal, as they improved their season record to 19-24, with a conference record of 19-22.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the second inning when
Isaac Stanwick delivered a two-run single to left center, driving in
Joey Coolbaugh and
Antonio Buentello. The momentum continued in the third inning with
Isaac Gonzalez adding another two RBIs with a single, bringing home
Omar Cervantes and
Abiam Medina. The Javelinas struggled to respond, managing to put runners on base but failing to capitalize due to stellar pitching by TAMIU's starter,
Isaac Ponce.
The scoring culminated in the fifth inning with
Joseph Cruz homering to center field, adding another run to their lead. Dalton Kramer of the Javelinas countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the same inning, but that would be the only run Kingsville could muster against Ponce, who dominated the game with 13 strikeouts over 8 innings, allowing just one run on nine hits.
Isaac Ponce earned the win, improving his record to 7-2, while Carter Poulson took the loss for Kingsville, dropping to 3-5 after giving up four earned runs in just three innings of work.
Isaac Stanwick made a significant impact early in the game with a two-run single in the second inning that initiated the scoring for TAMIU. This hit proved essential in a game where runs were at a premium.
Joseph Cruz further extended the lead with a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Isaac Gonzalez also played a key role, driving in two runs with a single in the third inning, which solidified TAMIU's early lead.
The Dustdevils and Javelinas will return to action on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. in Kingsville, TX.
