Kingsville, TX - In the first game of today's doubleheader, the Dustdevils delivered a commanding performance, shutting out Texas A&M-Kingsville with a 9-0 victory.
TAMIU took control of the game in the second inning, scoring three runs, highlighted by
Ariben Gutierrez's two-run single, and continued to dominate in the third with another three runs, including a key RBI triple by
Abiam Medina. The scoring was rounded out in the seventh inning with three more runs, driven by key hits from
Joey Coolbaugh and
Isaac Stanwick.
The Javelinas struggled defensively, committing a total of six errors which contributed to their downfall. Despite the loss, TAMUK did manage 10 hits but left eight runners stranded and failed to convert scoring opportunities into runs.
The winning pitcher,
Cody Templeton, improved his record to 5-3 with a complete game shutout, scattering 10 hits across 7 innings while striking out 8 without conceding a walk. Javelina starting pitcher Colton Taylor took the loss, dropping his season record to 2-7 after allowing six runs (five earned) over six innings.
Game 2
In the second game of the doubleheader the Dustdevils secured another win against the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, with a final score of 8-5. This game marked another solid performance for TAMIU, improving their record to 21-24 overall and 21-22 in the Lone Star Conference, while the Javelinas fell to 23-26 overall and 21-26 in conference play.
The game started off quietly with no runs in the first inning, but TAMIU quickly changed the pace in the second inning by scoring six runs. This significant rally was sparked by
Isaac Stanwick's RBI single, followed by a series of hits including a two-run single by
Nomar Prieto and RBI singles from
Abiam Medina,
Omar Cervantes, and
Joseph Cruz. This early burst provided TAMIU a solid lead, though the Javelinas responded in the bottom half with a three-run homer by Logan Crow and added two more runs in the third via Michael Cervantes's two-run homer, tightening the score to 6-5.
However, TAMIU didn't let the Javelinas' comeback unsettle them. In the fourth inning, Medina and Cervantes each homered, extending the lead to 8-5. From the fifth inning onwards, both teams' pitchers clamped down, and no further runs were scored.
Jan Cabrera was credited with the win, pitching six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, and striking out six. Daniel Cardona took the loss for Kingsville, struggling in just 1.2 innings where he gave up six runs.
RJ Patrick earned the save, his third, by recording the final out in a clutch relief appearance.
The Dustdevils and Javelinas will return to action tomorrow for game 4 beginning at 1 p.m. in Kingsville, TX.
