Laredo, Texas - The Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Dustdevils are gearing up for their first-ever Lone Star Conference (LSC) Tournament appearance. With an overall record of 24-26 and an even 24-24 record in conference play, TAMIU earned the six seed in the upcoming tournament.
In the opening round of play, the Dustdevils face the No. 3 seed, Angelo State, in a best-of-three series. TAMIU had a mixed regular-season record against Angelo State, winning one out of four games. Isaac Ponce, a standout pitcher for the Dustdevils, secured the lone victory against Angelo State during the regular season.
Ponce has been instrumental on the mound for TAMIU this season, boasting a 7-3 record with a 4.10 ERA. His 77 strikeouts on the year have been crucial in keeping opposing hitters at bay, with opponents batting .264 against him. Ponce sits top-10 in the LSC in ERA (2nd), wins (3rd), innings pitched (6th), strikeouts (2nd) and average against (5th).
While Ponce leads the pitching staff, Abiam Medina leads the offense. With an impressive .412 batting average and an OPS of 1.130, Medina has been the spark plug for the Dustdevils' offense. He has racked up 11 doubles, 7 home runs, and a team-leading 56 RBIs. Medina sits top-10 in the Lone Star Conference in batting average (7th), runs (10th), hits (6th), RBIs (10th), total bases (10th) and on-base percentage (3rd).
Backing up Medina's offensive prowess is Omar Cervantes, who leads the team with 8 home runs on the season, providing additional power in the Dustdevils' lineup.
Despite being newcomers to the LSC Tournament, TAMIU enters with confidence and determination. They know they have the talent to compete at a high level, and their first-round matchup against Angelo State provides an opportunity to prove themselves on the big stage.
Game one is set for Friday, May 3rd, at 6:30 p.m. at Foster Field at 1st Community Union Stadium in San Angelo.
