Box Score San Angelo, Texas- The sixth-seeded Dustdevils traveled to the conference opener on Friday to take on the Angelo State Baseball team at the First Community Credit Union Stadium. The Rams defeated the Dustdevils with a final score of 9-1.
It was a slow start for both teams after the weather delayed the game. After three innings with no runs scored, the Rams went up 1-0 in the fourth inning, but the Dustdevils quickly answered as
Ariben Gutierrez singled to the shortstop to end up on first. Gutierrez then advanced to second by a fielder's choice followed by a sacrifice bunt by
Nomar Prieto which allowed Gutierrez to advance to third, putting the Dustdevils in a position to capitalize.
Abiam Medina was able to drive a run home with a single into left field, tallying the first and only RBI on the night for the Dustdevils.
The Rams quickly answered back in the bottom of the fifth, driving in two runs in the inning to put the Rams up by two. The Rams continued to extend the lead after a homer in the seventh inning to go up 6-1. A triple in the eighth inning went on to help seal the deal for the Rams putting them up 9-1 with one inning left.
Isaac Ponce pitched five innings facing 24 batters. Ponce ended up throwing four strikeouts, allowing five hits,and four runs on the night giving up the loss. The Dustdevils had a hard time stopping the Rams offense despite the pitching efforts from Ponce, Cabrera, Brewer and Duran.
The Dustdevils will continue the action against the Rams on Saturday with the first pitch moved up to 2 p.m.
