Dustdevils Rock The Hardrockers In Home Opener

Box Score Laredo, Texas- It was Resident night at Dustdevil Stadium on Thursday as the Texas A&M International Dustdevils took on the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers. The beloved TAMIU Mascot Dusty may have given away a lot of goals in a PK contest at halftime against many of the students and local kids in the city, but the Men's soccer  team showed no mercy towards their opponent as they came out dominating from the beginning to the end.

It was a one-sided affair for most of the game as the Dustdevils led in possession for most of the entire first half but remained scoreless going into the second half of play.  The Dustdevils shot 6 shots and had 3 corners but could not convert. After winning goalkeeper of the week for the Lone Star Conference, Nicklas Berg-Eriksen continued to shine bright having 5 saves on the night.

The second have was much as the same as TAMIU was able to not only control the pace of play still but was able to knock in 3 goals on the night. The fireworks started whenever the Junior from Dallas, Texas knocked in a goal in the bottom right corner of the net in the 48th minute. Dereck Espinal, the junior from Austin, Texas scored in the 56th minute to put the Dustdevils up 2-0. Saul Fernandez cleared a shot to the high right side of the net which was assisted by Guy Lehrer putting the Dustdevils up 3-0. The game was sealed after Nico Weigandt nailed a shot in the low left side of the goal. It was a great assist by teammate Yahir Gallardo and the chemistry was shown as the TAMIU Dustdevils celebrated what was then the cap on the game.

The Dustdevils outshot the Hardrockers 13-10. TAMIU had 4 goals, 2 assists, 3 corners and 5 saves on the night.
Head Coach Cladio Arias had the following statement,
"The game went really well. We played against a tough opponent who gave us a very tough first half. The biggest thing for our team is that we kept our composure. The goals came because we kept our composure. The guys in back helped us because they remained steady throughout the game. My team put in the work, and I am here to just help. Saturday, we hope to bring the intensity, and we will enjoy the victory tonight. We will be playing a very tough opponent this weekend so it will be back to work."

The TAMIU Men's Soccer team will be back in action Saturday against Montana State University at Billings at 12:00 PM. The action will take place at Dustdevil Soccer Stadium.
