The TAMIU Volleyball team took on the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets at West Texas A&M University on Thursday afternoon. This match would mark the first time on the sideline as the head coach for the Dustdevils for Tammie Jimenez. As assistant coach
Anabel Bustamante helped on the sideline to help secure the first victory of the season.
The Dustdevils came out strong, winning the first two sets of the match. The Yellow Jackets rallied for a come back in the third set before the Dustdevils held off their opponents 26-24 in the fourth set of the match.
Emma Lade, the star setter for the Dustdevils and conference setter of the year last year, helped encourage her team throughout the entire game. Lade finished the game with 46 assists and three service aces. She finished with an astounding .414 set percentage on 111 attempts.
Sierra Long led the Dustdevils in kills, finishing with 17 kills and 37 receptions.
Mia Molina finished the game with 13 kills, 12 receptions and 4 blocks for the Dustdevils.
Anna Ligart finished with 12 kills, 8 digs, and 1 block.
Lixai Perez led the way for the Dustdevils with 12 digs.
Caitlyn Cornell finished with 7 kills and 6 digs. Abby Buenostro finished with 5 kills and 3 digs.
Marianna Gamboa also had a strong showing for the Dustdevils.
The Dustdevils won the game in four sets finishing 25-21, 25-23, 18-25 and 26-24. There was a total of 9 lead changes and 22 ties during the game
Coach Tammie Jimenez had the following to say about her first win in her career as a Dustdevil,
"I am happy to be able to accomplish a win on the first game of the season. However, the girls are the ones who put in the work. I am extremely proud of their effort. This is a special group of girls. We are looking forward to our match tomorrow."
The TAMIU Dustdevils will take on #3 ranked West Texas A&M tomorrow at 12:00 PM.
