Chears leads Dustdevils Past Hilltoppers in 64-61 Victory

Austin, Texas – The Dustdevils started 2025 with a bang as Trinity Chears hit a last second three pointer to lead TAMIU to a 64-61 victory over St. Edward's on Friday. The freshman finished the night as the game's leading scorer with 21 points.

The Dustdevils shot 13-27 (48.1%) from the field and 5-12 (41.7%) from three-point range in the first half. The Hilltoppers shot 14-29 (48.3%) in the first 20 minutes, but the Dustdevil defense held St. Edward's to just four field goals in the second quarter.

In the second half, the Dustdevils shot 11-26 (42.3%) from the field and 2-5 (40%) from range. The defense once again held St. Edward's as they shot 8-24 (33.3%) from the field.

The game was tied at 61 in the final seconds of the game. Josie Igherighe was fouled with six seconds left and was awarded two free throws. TAMIU came away with an offensive rebound as the ball was dished to Chears. With less than one second left, Chears hit the three leading the Dustdevils to their first conference win.

"I'm proud of this team's fight," Coach Jaida Williams said. "I am proud that we kept our focus on the details when the game was on the line. At the end of the day, players make plays, and Josie and Alyssia came up with a huge rebound and Trinity hit a big time shot to win the game."

TAMIU looks to continue this momentum heading into Sunday's matchup against St. Mary's. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
