Laredo, Texas – The TAMIU Dustdevils hosted game one of its series against Lubbock Christian Friday afternoon. The TAMIU offense used 20 hits to score 21 runs and earn the run-rule victory by a final score of 21-11.
The Dustdevils scored first and scored early as
Ciro Benavides and
Omar Cervantes each brought in a run in the home half of the first as TAMIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
TAMIU kept its foot on the gas scoring two more runs in the second courtesy of
Abiam Medina and Benavides before adding two runs in the third courtesy of
Alex Lugo as the Dustdevils extended its lead to six.
LCU used a solo home run to get on the board in the top of the fourth, but the TAMIU offense responded with four runs in the home half of the inning with RBI from Lugo,
Eddie Saenz and
Haziel Cruz. After four innings, TAMIU led 11-1.
The Chaps plated two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Dustdevils responded with another four runs.
LCU rallied in the sixth, scoring five runs, but again the Dustdevils answered back with four more runs.
In the seventh, both teams scored three runs, bringing the final score to 21-11 in favor of the Dustdevils as TAMIU earned the run-rule victory.
Lugo led the offensive charge for TAMIU, going a perfect 5-5 at the plate and bringing in six runs.
Austin Brewer started the game on the mound for TAMIU and pitched 4.1 innings. He allowed three runs on nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Danny Dial earned the win for TAMIU behind a final line of 1.0 innings pitched, allowing five runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Jose Duran closed out the game for the Dustdevils pitching 1.2 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.
The series continues Saturday as the Chaps and Dustdevils face off in doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
