Austin, Texas – The Dustdevils traveled north to Austin on Friday to face St. Edward's in a four-game Lone Star Conference series. Facing the conference leader in strikeouts, the Dustdevils tallied 17 hits and 14 runs to take game one 14-6.
The game remained scoreless through the first two innings in what looked to be a pitching duel between
Omar Rodriguez and Kobe Jaramillo.
TAMIU got on the board in the top of the third with a 2-run home run by
Eddie Saenz. The Dustdevils extended its lead in the fifth with an RBI single from
Abiam Medina and a Hilltoppers error that scored two, extending the TAMIU lead to 5-0.
The Hilltoppers scored one in the sixth, but the Dustdevils answered back with a run in the top of the seventh to keep the lead at five.
Joseph Cruz hit a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth, bringing the TAMIU lead to 8-1.
St. Edward's cut into the TAMIU lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs bringing the game to 8-5.
Medina scored on a bases loaded walk before
Haziel Cruz blasted a grand slam to left field putting TAMIU up eight runs. Medina brought in the Dustdevils 14th run with a RBI single.
The Hilltoppers scored one in the bottom of the ninth, but that was it as TAMIU earned the 14-6 victory in game one.
Rodriguez was lights out for TAMIU, pitching seven innings and allowing just one unearned run on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Danny Dial and
Michael Ramos both pitched in relief.
The series continues Saturday with doubleheader action beginning at 12 p.m.
