LAREDO, Texas – The senior second basemen for Texas A&M International University, Ciro Benavides has been named the South-Central Region Hitter of the week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) following an explosive series against UT Permian Basin.
This nomination comes just a few days after Benavides was named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week, by recording the first five-hit game by any player this season.
Benavides opened the series, going 5-for-5 then dominated the falcons pitching by hitting a hot .891 (9-for-11), collecting three doubles, a triple, and driving in eight runs on the series without a single strikeout.
The Laredo native not only excelled in hitting but got on base by drawing a walk, hit by pitch three times, and stole a base successfully.
To win this nomination Ciro Benavides outperformed all hitters in the south-central region this week according to the NCBWA.
Benavides is criminal justice major, and an impressive lead off hitter for the Dustdevils so far this season.
The senior second baseman now heads to UT Tyler this weekend to face off in a four game conference series against the Patriots.
