Midwestern State (8-14,6-9) ended the first half shooting 69 percent with 5-of-6 falling in from beyond the arc.
In the second half, the Dustdevils found momentum from Caylen Goff Brown who scored 11 more points to obtain 23 on the night and a 51-50 lead with 14:27 to go. Spivey Word continued to lay it on with another six points coming off the bench to secure his season-high 19.
The Mustangs kept the score even throughout the second half with four ties and five lead changes, but the difficulty at the free throw line going 11-for-21 is what the Dustdevils took advantage of.
The Dustdevils led only by four, 72-68, with 1:08 remaining when an outlet pass from Payton Gusters found Aaron Perez open in the corner for a three pointer to secure the win.
Aaron Perez was scoreless in the first half but came up big in the final moments, scoring seven points in the second.
This win over the Mustangs makes history as it is the first road win for the Dustdevils in series history going back to 2007.
The Dustdevils remain on the road to face off against #11 Lubbock Christian University on Saturday.
