LUBBOCK – Texas The Dustdevils foul trouble and a 14-0 run in the final five minutes lead to a road loss against the #11 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals with a final score of 97-56 inside Rip Griffin Center.
TAMIU (8-16,5-11) in the first half saw Caylen Goff Brown lead the team with 13 points shooting 5-of-9 combining with Spivey Word's 10, and Luke Oxford's 7 to trail 50-37.
Lubbock Christian (22-4,13-3) forward Lucas Mercandino led the first half shooting 9-of-10 at the free throw line to score 13 points from some of the nine Dustdevil fouls. In that same half the Dustdevils only went to the line once.
In the second half Luke Oxford fouled out with 10 points while defending Amondo Miller Jr who scored 34 points in the game.
Without the defensive presence of Luke Oxford, the Chaps outscored the Dustdevils in the paint 52-to-24, going on a 14-0 run to finish the game.
22 Dustdevil fouls allowed a 27-to-7 free throw advantage for the home team preventing the Dustdevils from closing in.
The Dustdevils come back home to face Eastern New Mexico University on Thursday.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Spivey Word the senior guard from San Bernardino, California, recorded his second game in a row with double digits off the bench scoring 14 points, shooting 6-of-13, after recording a season-high 19 points last game against Midwestern State. Spivey Word is currently pursuing a degree in Kinesiology.
