TYLER- Texas The Dustdevils lose the first two games of the road series against UT Tyler due to timely Patriot hitting in game one, and Dustdevil pitching struggles in game two.
Game One doubleheader: Loss, Final Score 6-3
The first inning saw all three runs scored by the Dustdevils with Saul Soto's double bringing home Ciro Benavides who got on base with a walk. Eddie Saenz doubled into left field, bringing home Soto. Asahi Nakano got on base with a fielder's choice then Iann Cobos singled, allowing Nakano to get home on a Patriot error.
Dustdevil William Boucher started on the mound but received his first loss of the season (1-1) after Drew Schmidt hit a three-run homer to extend their lead 5-to-3.
Patriot starting pitcher Caden Copeland was subbed out in the first inning by Abel Coleson, who received the win (2-0). Coleson held the Dustdevils back with six strikeouts, allowing one run, and only four hits in five innings of work.
Shortstop Iann Cobos went 3-of-3 and found a way to swing against Coleson, but the Dustdevils as a team went 7-for-28 at the plate facing four Patriot pitchers.
Game Two doubleheader: Loss, Final Score 14-0
Dustdevils starter Emilo Duque allowed seven runs off five hits in the bottom of the first inning to put the Patriots up 7-0 heading into the second.
The Patriots at the plate collected eight hits on the evening, scoring 14 runs with five coming in the sixth to end the game by run rule in the seventh.
The Dustdevils walked 12 batters striking out five, while the Patriots walked three, striking out eight batters.
Julio garcia the right-handed starter for the Patriots played five innings of work dishing out six strikeouts and only allowing two hits.
Dustdevils, Jesus Sosa, Iann Cobos, and Saul Soto were the only three players able to get on base with a hit against Patriots pitching.
TAMIU (3-5,3-5) plays two more games against UT Tyler (7-1,7-1) over the weekend.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Iann Cobos, junior infielder, went 3-for-3 in game one to help the Dustdevils build in early lead. Cobos is currently pursuing a degree in Nursing.
