Benavides Two Home Run Inning In Dustdevils Doubleheader Loss To ASU

LAREDO, TEXAS   Dustdevils lose two in Doubleheader against Angelo State final scores of 10-9, and 5-3 Saturday inside Jorge Haynes Field.  

Game Two, 10-9 Loss  

Dustdevils trailed 2-0 heading into the the bottom of the first where they had their most explosive inning this season.  

11 different batters stepped up to the plate in the inning with Ciro Benavides hitting two home runs, Jacob Angell hitting a three-run home run, and Giovanni Malatesta hitting a two RBI single. This inning saw eight hits, and eight runs building the lead to 8-2. Benavides is now the first player in the Lone Star Conference to hit two home runs in the same inning.  

Rams, in the third inning, brought home three runs with Chase Pendley hitting a two RBI triple into right field and coming home off an error.  

Rams continued to fight in the fifth with Payton Bush and Chase Pendley getting on base with a single. Bush then scores on a wild pitch, and Chase Becker hits a sac-fly to score Pendley, bringing the Dustdevil lead to only one, 8-7.  

In the bottom of the fifth, Derek Garcia doubled into center with Jacob Angell hitting an RBI double to bring him home. This extended the lead to 9-7.  

Angelo State in the sixth brought in three runs off four hits to secure a 10-9 lead.  

Dustdevils were held to two hits after the fifth losing game three final score of 10-9 

Game Three, Loss 5-3 

Dustdevils came out the gate hot once again with Ciro Benavides hitting a double in the first with Eddie Saenz bringing him home off an RBI double of his own.  

Rams responded in the second with two runs coming off a single from Christian Garnette into left field.  

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the second, Dustdevils responded with a sac-fly from Ciro Benavides scoring Derek Garcia, and David Benitez scoring on a passed ball to take the lead 3-2.  

Angelo State held the Dustdevils back from scoring anymore runs after the second, scoring a run of their own in the third, fourth, and sixth to win 5-3.  

TAMIU starting pitcher Dylan Kinney pitched all seven innings of this game, allowing seven hits facing 26 batters.  

TAMIU (10-19) plays Angelo State (20-9) in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon inside Jorge Haynes Field.  

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Senior second baseman, Ciro Benavides, hit his first two homers this season in the first inning of game two. This is the first player in the Lone Star Conference to accomplish two home runs in the same inning this season. Benavides went 4-8 with four RBI in the doubleheader. Benavides is currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice.
