LAREDO, TEXAS — Texas A&M International softball fell in both ends of a doubleheader to St. Mary's on Saturday at Dustdevil Field, dropping Game 1, 8-0, and Game 2, 5-1.
The Rattlers used early offense in the opener and a late surge in Game 2 to secure the sweep.
Game 1: St. Mary's 8, TAMIU 0 (5 innings)
St. Mary's jumped out early with two runs in the first inning and broke the game open with a four-run second.
A two-run home run highlighted the early push as the Rattlers built a 6-0 lead through two innings and never looked back.
TAMIU was limited offensively, recording just two hits in the contest from Austyn Marriage and Queenandra Dunn.
Nevaeh Herrera took the loss in the circle after allowing seven runs over 3.1 innings, while Madison Taylor Gray provided relief. The Rattlers added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth to secure the run-rule victory.
Game 2: St. Mary's 5, TAMIU 1
The Dustdevils showed more fight in the second game, keeping things close through five innings and taking an early lead.
TAMIU got on the board in the third inning when Klarisa Martinez doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Victoria Espinoza to make it 1-0.
St. Mary's responded in the sixth inning with a five-run rally to take control and pull away for the win.
Espinoza led the Dustdevils offensively, going 3-for-4 with the team's lone RBI, while TAMIU finished with seven hits.
Kylie Goad kept TAMIU in the game through five innings before being charged with the loss.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Victoria Espinoza led the offense in Game 2, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and accounting for TAMIU's only run of the day. Her performance at the plate provided a spark for the Dustdevils in the nightcap.
