Hilltoppers Take Both In Home Doubleheader

LAREDO,TEXAS – The Hilltoppers take game two with an explosive win 17-1 and win game three of the series in an extra innings battle 8-7 Saturday inside Jorge Haynes Field.  

Game Two, 17-1, Loss 

The Hilltoppers responded in a big way after losing game one in extra innings. By the end of the third inning St. Edwards was on top 10-0 with multiple RBI base hits and a grand slam from Connor Cox in the third.  

Dustdevils responded in the bottom of the fourth scoring their only run of the game with an RBI single from Asahi Nakano scoring Iann Cobos.  

Dustdevils were out hit 21-5 in this game and could not come back from seven more runs coming late to lose 17-1.  

Game Three, 8-7, Loss 

St. Edward's started hot once again scoring four runs in the top of the first with a three-run home run by Dylan Tate.  

The Dustdevils responded with two runs in the bottom of the first with Giovanni Malatesta and Fabrizio Salinas hitting run scoring base hits.  

Both teams went to score a single run by the fifth, and the Dustdevils found themselves trailing 5-3.  

In the bottom of the sixth, the Dustdevils took the lead with Derek Garcia scoring on a passed ball, Iann Cobos two run single, and Ciro Benavides scoring on a wild throw.  

In the top of the seventh, Hilltoppers tied it 7-7 with an RBI single to center by Jacob Bullcroft and Nico Ruedas reaching on an error.  

In extra innings Ben Merriman hit an RBI double to center field taking the one run lead that would stick to win.  

TAMIU (14-27) plays St Edward's (24-16) in a series finale Sunday inside Jorge Haynes Field.  

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Junior Pitcher, from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Angel Larrañaga, in his sixth appearance of the season went 2.1 inn of work collecting five strikeouts only allowing a single run in relief work. Larrañaga is currently pursuing a degree in Kinesiology.
