Dustdevils Build Large Lead to Hold Buffs Comeback

CANYON, TEXAS - The Dustdevils built a large early lead of 11 runs through six innings at the plate, when a Buffs comeback begins that falls short 13-11 Friday night inside Wilder Park. 

TAMIU (16-27) got on early with a solo home run by Eddie Saenz for his seventh of the season. This was followed by a two-run triple by Fabrizio Salinas for his first of the season and an RBI single by Derek Garcia up the middle.  

Leading 4-0 going into the fourth, Dustdevil Jesus Sosa hit a two-run home run in the fourth with a bomb to center, his first of the season.  Eduardo Espinoza got on base with a fielding error then came home from a double play started by an Iann Cobos ground ball. 

In the fifth, Fabrizio Salinas and Derek Garcia singled to right center getting on base for Jesus Sosa to bring them home with a double to right center again.  

In the sixth Cobos walks, and Asahi Nakano singles to get aboard. Salinas walks to make bases loaded. Derek Garcia steps up collecting another hit this time a three-run triple to center field. 

WT (24-19) in the sixth collected eight runs with five RBI hits with a run scoring single by Hobdy, a two-run single by Bunker followed by a run scoring Double by Haynes and an RBI triple by Thomas. This brought the score to 12-9  

In the seventh, Buffs Alwin hit a solo HR and an RBI double by Rackham in the eighth, making it a single run ballgame after eight innings 12-11.  

The Dustdevils in the ninth saw Eduardo Espinoza double to get on base and a double by Ciro Benavides scoring an insurance run making it 13-11.  

The Buffs were unable to score a run allowing the Dustdevils to take game one of the road conference series.  

The Dustdevils collected 19 hits, scoring 13 runs while the Buffs collected 11 runs off 12 hits.

Texas A&M International plays against West Texas A&M in seven inning doubleheader Saturday inside Wilder Park.  

PLAYERS SPOTLIGHT: Freshman Third Baseman, Derek Garcia went 4-for-5 collecting four RBI's on the day the most in a single game by him this season. Senior First Baseman Eddie Saenz collected his fourth home run in his last five games of play, his seventh on the season. Garcia and Saenz are currently pursuing degrees in Kinesiology.
