SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M International University men's cross country team captured the team championship at the UIW Invitational, while the Dustdevil women placed seventh.

TAMIU's men finished first in the 11-team field with 42 points, placing four runners among the top seven. The Dustdevils finished 15 points ahead of runner-up Texas State and 19 points ahead of host Incarnate Word.

Freshman Shamil Kiprono led the way by winning the individual 8K title with a time of 25:06. Sophomore Ian Rono followed in third place at 25:20, while freshman Brian Kipkorir crossed the line fourth in 25:26.

Freshman Elias Kiptanui gave TAMIU its fourth top-seven result, placing seventh with a time of 25:44. Fellow freshman Roy Kipruto completed the Dustdevils' scoring five by finishing 27th in 26:56.

Gabriel Garza placed 37th with a time of 27:26, while Jorge Sanchez finished 58th in 29:16.

On the women's side, TAMIU recorded 192 points to place seventh in the 11-team field.

Freshman Iyvonne Jepkoech paced the Dustdevils in the 5K, finishing 24th with a time of 18:28. Freshman Eileen Cheruto followed in 33rd at 18:42.

Freshman Sharon Kemboi placed 40th in 19:01, while sophomore Brenda Chepkemboi finished two spots behind her in 42nd with a time of 19:02. Junior Mercy Kosgei rounded out TAMIU's scoring lineup, placing 53rd in 20:33.

Stellah Lagat finished 56th with a time of 20:49, and Valerie Esparza crossed the line in 24:03 to complete the Dustdevils' contingent.
