Women’s Basketball Routed by Abilene Christian

Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Junior Sam Chacon led all scorers with 19 points, but it wasn’t enough as the TAMIU women’s basketball team took a tough loss to Abilene Christian University 94-66 Saturday night at the Moody Coliseum in Abilene.

The Dustdevils shot just 31 percent from the floor and were outrebounded 57-33 by the Wildcats.  ACU scored 21 second chance points compared to TAMIU’s 9 and scored 38 points in the paint.  The Wildcats bench also outscored the Dustdevils’ 33-13.

The Wildcats were led by Sadie Dickinson, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.  Dickinson was one of four ACU players to score in double figures, as the Wildcats shot 49 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range.

Tina Dang scored 13 points for the Dustdevils on 5-16 shooting, while Malika Jackson and Kim Brown added ten points apiece.

The game was back and forth in the early minutes and TAMIU trailed by only two points with 7:46 remaining in the half.  From there the Wildcats began to pull away using a 7-0 run to grab a 34-25 lead.  After an and-one by Alexandria Dews which cut the lead to six, ACU finished the half on a 17-6 run taking a 51-34 lead into the break.

A three from Kim Brown at the 15:37 mark cut the lead down to eight points, but that’s as close as TAMIU would get the rest of the way.  The Wildcats used an 11-4 run over the next seven minutes capped by a Dickson three, to take a 69-54 lead.  After two free throws by Chacon, ACU once again went on a run, this time 9-3, extending their lead to 19 points.  The Wildcats slowly increased their lead over the final five minutes, as they coasted to a 94-66 win.

The Dustdevils start the season 0-1 as they prepare to head to Denton, Texas for the Texas Women’s University tournament.  TAMIU opens tournament play taking on host TWU on November 17 at 2:30 p.m.
