Volleyball Rolls Over Newman on Senior Day

Box Score LAREDO, Texas- The TAMIU volleyball team finished with .381 attack percentage, their second highest of the season, on their way to a straight set rout over Newman University (25-22, 25-14, 25-10) Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU KCB.

With the win TAMIU improves to 14-10 overall and 6-6 in conference, while the loss drops the Jets out of playoff contention with an overall record of 4-17 and 2-11 in conference.

The Dustdevils could not have given their seniors Jackie Matula, Andrea Marshall, and Daria Winckler a better gift on senior night than the commanding win over Newman. Senior Andrea Marshall had a season high 15 kills complimented by 8 digs.

“I’ve been struggling with moving my feet and the timing but I just got my feet set like my coaches told me to do,” said Marshall on her offensive success.

Senior Daria Winckler threw in a double-double with 11 digs and 33 assists, bringing her season assist total to 851 good for second in the Heartland Conference. The Dustdevils hit over.300 in every set and totaled 47 kills to their opponents 36.

With the energy of senior night running through the gym, the Dustdevils gained the advantaged in set one, which was highlighted by four of Andrea Marshall’s kills.

The second set was a similar story as TAMIU jumped out to a speedy 5-0 lead. Newman struck back and surged to within one point to bring the set to 10-9. But the Dustdevils steady offensive attack that consisted of .412 attack percentage and 15 kills was too much for the opponent. Before long, the Jets found themselves down 22-10 and mustered out four more points to no avail, as they dropped the set 25-14.

“The kids stayed focus the whole time and we caused frustration by playing well,” said Head Coach Marlon Sano. “I think they [Newman] really struggled because there is not much incentive for them so I think a little frustration set in on their part”.

With TAMIU’s confidence at its peak and Newman’s looking bleak, the Dustdevils made their move in the third set.  An overwhelming 16-5 lead was accumulated by TAMIU through offensive attacks by Andrea Marshall and Miranda Pratt. The Jets would add on four more points but ran out of gas as the Dustdevils overtook them 25-10.

TAMIU now looks to the future as they sit in a tie for fourth place with rival St. Mary’s University. Both teams will face off versus Dallas Baptist and St. Edward’s in their last two games of the season.  If the two teams were to finish the season tied, the Dustdevils would advance to the postseason, as TAMIU owns the tiebreaker over the Rattlers.

Next up the Dustdevils will go on the road to face St. Edwards on November 8 at 7 p.m.
