Second Half Struggles Sink Dustdevils

Box Score LAREDO, Texas (December 18) – After playing perhaps their best opening half of the season, the TAMIU women’s basketball team came out flat in the second half allowing Angelo State University to run away with a 80-66 win Tuesday night at the TAMIU KCB.

TAMIU looked sharp in the first half, shooting 42.4 percent from the field and dishing out ten assists compared to only three by the Belles.  The Dustdevils led by as many as 10 points before the Belles closed on a 15-2 run to take a 40-37 lead into the break.

The Belles flipped the script on TAMIU in the second half, holding the Dustdevils to just 26.2 percent shooting from the floor and a 1-11 performance from three point range.  Angelo State picked up right where they left off in the first half, extending their 15-2 run to a 34-6 run to take an 18-point lead with 12:30 left to play.

Haylee Oliver was the difference maker for the Belles in the second half scoring 15 points on 5-10 shooting, including a 3-5 performance from beyond the arc.

Malika Jackson led the Dustdevils with her first double-double of the season scoring 16 points to go along with a game-high 17 rebounds.  Sam Chacon added 19 points, six assists, and five steals, while Amanda Mangan finished just shy of a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds.  Tina Dang had an uncharacteristic night shooting just 3-16 from the field and knocking down only 2-8 three-pointers to finish with 10 points.  Alexandria Dews also added ten points on 5-12 shooting.

Oliver finished with a game-high 22 points for the Belles hitting four three-pointer and grabbing ten rebounds, all on the defensive end.  Three other players scored in double figures for San Angelo with, Cassi Stegall, Lauren Holt, and Leah LeMaire adding 17, 11, and 10 points respectively.

The loss drops the TAMIU’s record to 3-7 on the season as the Dustdevils prepare for a 11-day break before returning to the court January 29 to take on Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.  Following their game versus the Saints, the Dustdevils return to conference play hosting back-to-back home games versus Oklahoma Panhandle State and UT-Permian Basin.
