San Antonio Hosts Heartland Clash

TAMIU visits St. Mary's in high-noon shootout

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Bitter rivals reacquainted themselves on Saturday in San Antonio when Texas A&M International visited St. Mary’s in a Heartland Conference contest.

The Rattlers’ raised their season record to 6-7 (3-1 Heartland) by way of a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-14) victory as the Dustdevils dropped to 1-12 (0-5) on the season.

The match’s first and final games were dominated by the home team, which won both via wire-to-wire performances. TAMIU only saw the lead swing in its direction in the second game, one that produced six score-tying plays and four lead changes.

The Dustdevils captain, senior Miranda Pratt, paced the team’s scoring and offensive production with 14 points off 12 kills and an assist. She also contributed three blocks and a dig.

Behind Pratt, Toriana Goods threw down 11 kills and two blocks to complement seven digs for 12 points. Jana Badenhausen (8 kills, 8 points) and Samantha Gonzalez (2 kills, 4 blocks, 4.5 points) were the only other Dustdevils with more than two points.

Paige Criss (1 kill, 2 blocks, 2 points) and Lizzie Prieto (1 kill, 1 block, 1.5 points) contributed offensively toward TAMIU’s 44 total points.

Prieto’s most significant contribution came from her staggering 29 assists. The Dustdevils produced only 34 assists, with Prieto leading by a massive margin. Criss, Badenhausen, Pratt, Koral Wright and Desiree Ortiz each tossed in one assist.

Ortiz (14 digs) and Prieto (11 digs) were the only two with double-digit defensive totals.

The Dustdevils will continue the 4-game road trip with a pair of Heartland Conference contests before returning home on Oct. 10. TAMIU faces Newman at 7 p.m. on Oct. 3 and Oklahoma Panhandle State at 7 p.m. on Oct. 4.

The Oct. 10 home match will see a visiting Dallas Baptist face the Dustdevils in the annual breast cancer awareness promotional Dig Pink game. The action tips off at 7 p.m. at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
