CANYON, Texas – The Texas A&M International Dustdevils (4-4) fell to No. 3/4 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs (7-1), 84-63, on Sunday afternoon at the First United Bank Center.
The Dustdevils gave the Lady Buffs a panic in the first half, as they took the lead early off of a 3-pointer from junior Jessica Prieto. TAMIU then kept the score tight as it ended the half just five points behind WTAM (43-38). TAMIU had the largest lead of the half, darting ahead twice by six points. TAMIU shot 53.3 percent from the field, and 54.6 percent from the 3-point range.
During the second half, the Dustdevils didn't come quite as strong as the first half. The Lady Buffs attacked the Dustdevils offensively and, with 10 minutes to go, the Lady Buffs were up by 20 points. TAMIU shot 30.8 percent from the field and 28.8 percent from 3-point range. TAMIU was successful at the free throw line, shooting 83.3 percent, all made in the second half.
TAMIU was led by senior Stella Ghazarian, who went 6-for-15 from the field and 5-for-13 from 3-point range. Ghazarian scored 19 points, recorded two steals, one assist, and a rebound.
Right behind Ghazarian was Prieto, who added 18 points along with four assists and two steals. Prieto went 7-for-18 from the field (5-for-13 from 3-point range). Senior Bezait Anbesse went 71.4 percent from the field, scoring 10 points for the Dustdevils, her career-high. Anbesse also recorded six rebounds and two assists.
Next up, TAMIU will start up Heartland Conference play by facing Lubbock Christian on Dec. 18 and Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Dec. 20.
