LAREDO, Texas - The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith defeated Texas A&M International University 66-47 in Heartland Conference action on Thursday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology & Convocation Building.
UAFS (12-7, 10-2 Heartland) built an early 16-8 lead but TAMIU chipped away with senior Alexis Thomas cutting the lead to 21-20 with two free throws at the 5:03 mark of the first half. The Lions would finish the half with a 14-4 run to take a 35-24 lead at the break.
TAMIU (9-11, 5-7) cut the lead to 35-27 on a Jessica Prieto 3-pointer 15 seconds into the second half but UAFS responded with a 13-0 run to take a commanding 48-27 lead at the 14:24 mark. The Dustdevils would get no closer than 18 points the rest of the game.
Thomas finished with a team-high 14 points with Jessica Woo also finishing in double-figures with 12 points. Thomas and Keiona Mathews finished with a team-high five rebounds apiece and Prieto led the squad with six assists.
TAMIU will attempt to return to the win column on Saturday with a key home conference game against Rogers State at 1 p.m. RSU defeated TAMIU 73-68 earlier this season in Claremore, Okla.
