Dustdevils rattle St. Mary's in 20 point victory

LAREDO, Texas (January 21, 2016) – The Texas A&M International Women's Basketball team defeated Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's Thursday night. The Dustdevils built an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Rattlers 73-53. TAMIU moves to 9-8 overall and 6-3 in the Heartland Conference.
 
The Dustdevils opened the second quarter with a 16-0 run, opening up a 17 point lead. Leading at the half 40-25 TAMIU controlled the next 20 minutes of play. The Dustdevils did not let St. Mary's come within 10 points of the lead throughout the final 24:36 of regulation.
 
Seniors Jessica Prieto and Keiona Mathews led the Dustdevils scoring 18 and 22 respectively. Prieto finished with 18 points while grabbing eight (8) rebounds. Mathews recorded her second double-double in as many games with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Tonight's performance gives Mathews six (6) double-doubles on the season. Jessica Alvarez scored 11 and grabbed six (6) rebounds, a season high in points for Alvarez.
 
The Dustdevils shot 48% from the field and sank 10 three-point baskets. TAMIU's biggest advantage came in the fourth quarter, leading by 25. The Dustdevils won the rebounding battle grabbing 37 boards compared to 34 for the Rattlers.
 
Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson commented on the win saying, "I'm very happy with the energy, the effort, and attention to detail that our team showed tonight. We did a good job playing together and sharing the basketball. We had a balanced contribution tonight and we're a much better basketball team when we have that. We still have improvements to make but I know our girls are willing to do the work that it will take to become a better basketball team."
 
The Dustdevils next game is Thursday, January 28. TAMIU will take on Heartland Conference opponent, Newman. Tip-Off is set for 5:30 pm in the TAMIU KCB.
