LAREDO, Texas (January 28, 2016) -- The Texas A&M International Men's Basketball team defeated Newman University 83-78. The Dustdevils moved to 14-5 overall and 9-2 in the Heartland Conference.
With the Dustdevils leading by three (3) with 23 seconds left in the second overtime, Junior
Jordan VanDeKop sank both of his free-throws, giving TAMIU the five (5) point advantage. After two (2) overtime periods the Dustdevils came away with the 83-78 win. With the win, the Dustdevils move back into the top spot in the Heartland Conference.
A back and forth game saw the Dustdevils and Jets trade the lead 10 times. TAMIU pounded the paint all night, scoring 50 points in the painted area. The Dustdevils got help off the bench as they scored 25 points off the bench. TAMIU had the advantage on the boards as well, out rebounding the Jets 44-33.
VanDeKop led the way with 22 points, recording seven (7) rebounds and four (4) assists.
Anthony Alston finished with 18 points, shooting 6-6 from the stripe.
Arkeem Joseph recorded his seventh double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 boards.

Bryan Weakley commented after the game saying, "This was a grind out game. It was not pretty but we found a way. I was proud of our bench. They really gave us a huge lift when our two Seniors fouled out."
The Dustdevils are back in action Saturday, January 30. TAMIU will continue Heartland Conference play against Oklahoma Christian. Tip-off is set for 3 pm at the TAMIU KCB.
