Senior Day Success, Dustdevils earn first win over OC

LAREDO, Texas (October 15, 2016) - The Texas A&M International University Women's Soccer team celebrated Senior Day with their first win of the season on Saturday. TAMIU defeated Oklahoma Christian at the TAMIU Soccer Complex, moving to 1-13-0 overall (1-9-0 HC).

TAMIU evened the season series with the Eagles at home in the 42nd minute of play. Monica Castro played a ball to Mariana Avina five yards out, Avina would control the ball, pushing it past the keeper. The goal was Avina's second career goal, her first at home. 

Freshman Goalkeeper, Kiyana Lopez was locked in throughout, picking up her first career shutout. Lopez recorded seven saves, including a clutch save in the 85th minute, preserving the one-goal lead.

TAMIU finished the game with 13 shots, five on goal. The defense was strong throughout, holding OC scoreless through 90 minutes.

Head Coach Felipe Arias commented after the win, "Our determination to stay focused throughtout the 90 minutes was key to today's victory. We played a solid defensive game and created so many opportunities offensively to score more goals. It made it more special for our seniors since we are sending them out with a victory! There are still four more games left in the season and we will try to get the most out of them."

The Dustdevils will play the final four games of the regular season on the road, starting with a matchup in Calremore, Oklahoma. TAMIU takes on Rogers State on October 20, play is set to begin at 5pm CST.
