Hodgson nets three goals in season finale

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (October 29, 2016) - The Texas A&M International University Men's Soccer Team closed out the regular season with a matchup against St. Mary's on Saturday. TAMIU won the game 6-1, finishing 6-11 overall (5-9 HC).

With playoff hopes on the line, the Dustdevils looked to win a key game in San Antonio.

Rafael Montabes put TAMIU up one in the 29th minute of play. Ryan Hodgson played a ball to Montabes from the penalty marker which was netted for the first goal.

Montabes would score six minutes later, putting TAMIU up 2-0. After the ball bounced back off the keeper, Montabes fired a shot, finding the back of the net for his second goal.

The first 45 minutes would end with TAMIU up 2-0.

Michael Iskander added to the Dustdevil lead in the 53rd minute. Josiah Benjamin played a ball from six yards that Iskander redirected into the back of the net.

The Rattlers would manage a goal in the 56th minute, cutting the TAMIU lead to two.

Ryan Hodgson scored the fourth Dustdevil goal of the game in the 83rd minute. Funcia Kenneh fired a shot that bounced off the keeper, Hodgson would bury the second attempt to push the Dustdevil lead to three goals.

Hodgson added a fifth Dustdevil goal 1:05 later. Gustavo Flores played a ball into the box which was headed into the back of the net by Hodgson.

Hodgson would add his tenth goal of the season in the 87th minute. Hodgson's third goal would come off another Flores assist.

Hodgson finished with three goals while Montabes finished the game with two goals, the Dustdevils largest scoring effort of the season. Hodgson finishes with 10 goals on the season while Iskander finished with two. Montabes' two goals bring his season total to six.

Head Coach Claudio Arias commented after the game "We thank God for a good finish of the season. We were able to do what we couldn't during the season, which was to score goals. It gives us hope for next year as most of our boys are returning. This is a good way to send out the Seniors as well."

The win moved TAMIU to 15 points overall but an Eastern New Mexico win eliminates the Dustdevils from the Heartland Conference Tournament.
