Dustdevils hold on in double overtime victory over Rogers State

CLAREMORE, Oklahoma (February 6, 2016) -- The Texas A&M International Women's Basketball team found themselves in overtime for a second game against Rogers State on Saturday afternoon. Securing the season sweep against the Hillcats, the Dustdevils held on for a 86-78 double overtime victory on the road. TAMIU improves to 12-9 overall, and hold a tie for 2nd place in Heartland Conference standings with their 9-4 conference record.

The Dustdevils found their offensive groove early as they led the Hillcats by 6 at the half. They extended their lead to 9 at the completion of 30 minutes, but the Hillcats rallied in the final 10 minutes to match the Dustdevils score. Through five minutes of extended play, both teams added 7 to their scores, requiring an additional 5 minutes of play. In the second overtime, the Dustdevils strategy helped them to double the Hillcats points, securing the 8-point win.

Senior Guard Jessica Prieto fired up the Dustdevils by producing 26 points in the victory. She, and Senior Guard Keiona Mathews, each notched four assists. Mathews added 19 tallys of her own in her time on the floor. The duo led their team through the majority of the game; however, in a defensive effort from the Hillcats, both seniors would be fouled out before the final buzzer.

Junior Rosebrooke Hunt grabbed a double-double by collecting 12 points, while also showing her presence infront of the net. Hunt led the Dustdevils with 11 boards.

"(I'm) really proud of the girls for pulling out the win," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "With JP and Keke on the bench, everyone really stepped up."

The full team effort of the Dustdevils stood out, as Seniors Jessica Prieto and Keiona Mathews had to watch the final minutes of overtime from the bench. Junior Hannah Beede added 12 points of her own, while Senior Lizzie Prieto stepped up to contribute another 11 points. Lizzie Prieto went 6-7 from the line to secure the Dustdevils win.

Bento-Jackson continued by saying, "We had great balance tonight in our offense attack and everyone contributed. As always there are areas that need to be cleaned up and we will work on that. We will enjoy this win and refocus on Monday to prepare for the upcoming week."

Up next, the Dustdevils will return home for their final homestand of the season. TAMIU hosts the Texas - Permian Basin Falcons (5-17,1-11 HC) on Thursday night at the TAMIU KCB. Tip off is set for 5:30pm CST.
