Women's Soccer kicks off 2016 campaign in Colorado

ALAMOSA, Colorado (September 2, 2016) -- The Texas A&M International University Women's Soccer team began their 2016 season in Alamosa, Colorado on Friday afternoon. The Dustdevils kicked the year off against Rocky Mountain Conference opponent Adams State, looking to secure their first win over the Grizzlies.

Head Coach Felipe Arias created his lineup with 10 new Dustdevils and one returner. Brenda Garcia returns to the field after a 2015 season that was cut short due to injury.

Throughout the first half, the Dustdevils focused on defensive efforts to hold the Grizzlies, which created three ASU fouls and two ASU offsides. The Grizzlies opened up the scoring in the 13th minute, and tacked on a second goal in the 44th minute.

The Dustdevils stood their ground against ASU's 14 shots in the second half, holding the Grizzlies offense to no goals. Newcomers Cio Bargallo, Monica Castro, and Amy Joya contributed shots for TAMIU.

TAMIU now stands at 0-2 against Adams State in the history of the program.

Freshman Goalkeeper Kiyana Lopez made her debut for the Dustdevils in net, making 5 saves with 6 direct shots on goal.

"We worked hard and hoped for a better result," said Coach Arias. "We are moving on and preparing ourselves for Sunday's contest."

Up next, the Dustdevils will head to Lakewood, Colorado to face off against Colorado Christian on Sunday, September 4. Kick off is set for 2:30PM CST. It will be the first contest in history between the Cougars and the Dustdevils.
