Dustdevils deal Falcons first loss on ninth inning home run from Cabezas

ODESSA, Texas (February 17, 2017) - The Texas A&M International University Baseball team kicked off their first road trip of the 2017 season on Friday. TAMIU took on UT-Permian Basin in a double-header. Despite fallling 1-10 in game one, TAMIU rallied to win game two 8-7. The Dustdevils move to 3-3 overall. 

Game 1: TAMIU 1 - UTPB 10
Jeremy Valadez put the Dustdevils ahead early, driving in Gavin Tristan on a sacrifice fly.The Dustdevils would be held scoreless through the remainder of the seven inning matchup as UTPB opened a nine-run lead. The Falcons answered with three runs in the first, five in the fourth, and two in the sixth. 

Jorge Gonzalez got the start for TAMIU, tossing three and a third on the mound. Hugo Mendiola relieved Gonzalez, tossing two and two thirds innings. 

Ricky Gonzalez led the Dustdevils at the plate, picking up two hits. Valadez was responsible for the Dustdevil RBI. 

Game 2: TAMIU 8 - UTPB 7
TAMIU struck first again in game two, plating four runs in the third. Valadez got things started with a two RBU single, scoring Tristan and Mario Ramirez. Sergio Pollorena would extend the Dustdevil lead to four with a two run homerun on the next at-bat. The Falcons would score the next seven runs, putting up two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and four in the seventh. Through seven innings, TAMIU trailed 4-7. Valadez would drive in his third and fourth RBI's of the afternoon on a second two RBI single, this time scoring Tristan and Ricky Gonzalez. TAMIU would take back the lead in the ninth off a two-run homerun from Alexander Cabezas. The homerun plated Jesse Phipps and Cabezas. Hugo Mendiola came in to relive the final two thirds of the ninth, picking up his first collegiate save. 

The Dustdevils picked up 10 hits in the win, evening the series at one game a piece. Eleazar Rojas picked up the win, moving to 1-0 on the season.

TAMIU closes out play in the weekend series on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1pm in Odessa.
