LAREDO, Texas (April 20, 2017) —Texas A&M International University Women's Basketball Coach
Jeff Caha has announced the addition of former Alexander High School star Alexis Contreras to the Dustdevils as a walk-on for the 2017-2018 season.
As a senior Contreras led the Lady Bulldogs to a 28-9 overall and 11-1 district record while averaging 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals per game. Alexis was named District MVP and was a member of the TABC All Region Team and TABC Academic All State Team.
"As a new coach coming to TAMIU, I let high school coaches know that if there was local talent capable of playing at the 4 year level, I would give them an honest evaluation. One of the coaches that I really have developed a great relationship with is Coach Cardenas at Alexander High School. Coach Car mentioned there was a former player on campus already attending TAMIU and she wanted an opportunity to try out. Alexis and I started building a relationship and after about two months of talking on a regular basis, I brought her in and worked her out. Her ability to listen and work hard was evident right away. Even though she had been out for a couple of years, you could see she had the ability to make some shots and score. Since she already was a TAMIU student, she started workouts with us this Spring and it has been great to see how much she really wants to improve and be a part of this team. We are very excited to have Alexis be a part of this for next year," said Caha.

Alexis becomes the ninth addition of a recruiting class that includes early signees Vanessa Oyola and Dannia Gonzales, redshirt forwards
Dionne Martin and Veshae Asaua Wilkinson, and transfers Jaden Gonzales, LaShae Rolle, Ashley Perez and Renee Contreras.
