LAREDO, Texas (May 5, 2016) - The Texas A&M International University Baseball Team opened the final series of the 2017 Regular Season against Newman on Friday. The Dustdevils fell 3-6 in game one and 2-10 in game two. TAMIU moves to 12-30 overall (6-16 Heartland Conference).
Game 1: TAMIU 3 - NU 6
After falling behind 1-0 in the fourth, TAMIU battled back to take a 2-1 lead in game one.
Ricky Gonzalez sent a two-run homerun over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth, driving in
Alex Medina.
Newman took a 4-2 lead in the fifth before TAMIU brought the game within a run in the sixth.
Abel Aguilar came around to score after
William Mora sent an RBI single to center.
Newman added two runs in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead.
Eddie Rodriguez got the start on the mound, tossing 4.1 innings before being relieved by
Jorge Gonzalez. Gonzalez tossed the final two and a third on the mound.
Game 2: TAMIU 2 - NU 10
TAMIU fell behind 7-0 in game two before plating a pair of runs in the sixth.
William Mora drove home
Jeremy Valadez and
Abel Aguilar with a two RBI double, cutting the lead to five. Newman added three late runs, extending the lead to 10-2.
Devon Torres tossed six innings on the mound, taking the loss.
Hugo Mendiola,
Erick Garay, and
Coleman Butler each tossed an inning relief.
Up Next:
TAMIU closes out play in the regular season on Saturday at Uni-trade Stadium. Senior Day festivities are set for 10:40am with first pitch slated for 11:00am.
