Second Half Goal Dooms Dustdevils Against #23 St. Edward’s in Heartland Conference Opener

AUSTIN, Texas (September 14, 2017) – The Texas A&M International University men's soccer team were unable to find a late goal falling to #23 St. Edward's 1-0 on Thursday afternoon in their Heartland Conference opener at Lewis-Chen Family Field. With the loss, the Dustdevils drop to 1-1-1 and 0-1-0 in conference play while the Hilltoppers improve to 4-1-0 (1-0-0).

The Dustdevils and Hilttoppers finished the match with 12 shots a piece with SEU putting seven  on-target compared to two from TAMIU. Junior Carlos Herrera (1-1-1) made a career-high six saves as he saw his consecutive scoreless streak end at 263:36 on Grant Mobley's goal in the 64th minute.

Michael Iskander came close to putting the Dustdevils up in the 26th minute after recovering a 50/50 ball just 30 yards from goal. After gaining position, the senior took two touches before sending the ball wide left off his right foot.

Andres Ogaz had TAMIU's best chance of the first half just 12 minutes later with a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The midfielder found space in the Hilltopper defense launching his left footed shot at the goal forcing SEU's William Tuffin to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Herrera came up huge for TAMIU in the 42nd minute on a long range shot from Daniel Wakeham. The junior keeper pushed Wakeham's shot to left before quickly recovering to block Samuel Jackson's from inside the penalty area.

The Dustdevils bid to start the season with three consecutive shutouts was ended at 63:35 on Mobley's second goal of the season on a nicely executed corner kick from the left side. Owain Hoskins headed Pablo Covarrubias' cross back into the middle of the penalty box where Mobley was left unmarked to give SEU the lead.

The Dustdevils quickly turned their attention to finding an equalizer but Alan Rivera's shot at 65:56 went wide. Iskander's second shot of the game came in the 71st minute but was saved by Tuffin while Jovany Carlino's shot just a minute later went wide right.

Herrera came up with another impressive save in the 76th minute on SEU's Dylan Armstrong to keep the Dustdevils within one goal. TAMIU continued to push numbers forward as Max Cruz and Carlino both registered shots in the 77th minute.

The Dustdevils will now turn their attention to their match against Dallas Baptist on Satuday, Sept. 16, at Patriot Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
