WICHITA, Kan. (September 14, 2017) – Freshman
Nicole Cohen tied a career high in shots as the Texas A&M International University women's soccer team lost 2-0 to Newman in a Heartland Conference matchup on Thursday night in Wichita, Kan. The Dustdevils allowed two goals in the first quarter of a hour as they dropped to 1-3-1 and 0-2-0 in conference play while NU improves to 4-2-0 (1-1-0).
Â
Cohen was one of the bright spots for the Dustdevil offense that was outshot 14-4 on the night as the El Paso native had three shots, two of which were on-target. That ties the mark that she set earlier this season against St. Mary's in Laredo.Â
Aubrey Hall (1-3-1) made three saves, all coming in the first half.
Â
Hall was called upon early to make plays as she made two saves in the first seven minutes on shots from NU's Grace Linton before Rosa Urista-Chico scored the first goal of the game to put the Dustdevils behind 1-0.
Â
TAMIU responded quickly with its best scoring opportunity of the night came a minute later when
Nicole Cohen found some space down the right side. The El Paso native got behind the NU defense but was unable to beat Ashley Sweetnam who punched the ball out of bounds for a
Tayler Schott corner kick.
Â
The Jets added another one in the 19
th minute on Grace Linton's sixth of the season after a nice cross from Colleen Howland into the penalty area. Cohen had another chance in the 35
th minute from the top of the box but Sweetnam was there for the save.
Â
NU came close to stretching their lead in the second half but were denied by the cross bar on two different occasions. Bargallo registered her first shot of the match in the 89
th minute on a free kick from 20 yards out but was unable to trouble Sweetman after hitting the wall.
Â
The Dustdevils return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, against Rogers State in Claremore, Okla. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Soldier Field.Â
