LAREDO, Texas (September 22, 2017) – The Texas A&M International University men's and women's cross country program will compete for the third straight week when they toe the line on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Islander Splash hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. It will mark the fifth straight year the Dustdevils have made the trip up US-59 to race at the Islander Cross Country Course.
This year's edition of the Islander Splash features Division I programs TAMUCC, Houston Baptist, UTSA and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley along with Angelo State of the Lone Star Conference. The women's 5,000-meter race starts at 7:30 a.m. followed by the men's four-mile race at 7:50 a.m.
"This is a smaller field against mainly Division I schools so for the men's team, we are going to work on making better decisions on the course," said TAMIU head coach
Benny Rodriguez. "On the women's squad, we will finally get to see Rosita (Armendariz) and Abril (Escamilla) race as they were just cleared by the NCAA. We will be looking to close the gap between our 1-5 runners."
The women's team is coming off their best finish of the year at last week's Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo.
Rebekah Hernandez was the top finisher for a school-record 23
rd straight race finishing 21
st overall while the Dustdevils finished 18
th defeating four other Heartland Conference schools.
The men's team enters the weekend looking to improve on last weekends 22
nd place finish.
Justo Idrogo was the top finisher for the Dustdevils for a second straight meet covering the 8K course in 26:59.98. Freshman
Eugene Garza also had a strong performance in Missouri finishing 132
nd in a personal best time of 27:18.47.
