WICHITA, Kansas (April 19, 2018) - The Texas A&M International University Baseball team opened a four-game series with Newman University on Thursday. TAMIU fell 3-5 in game one and 6-7 in game two. The Dustdevils move to 12-27 overall and 4-14 in Heartland Conference play.
GAME ONE: TAMIU 3 - NU 5
Ruben Solis got the nod in game one on Thursday. Solis tossed five innings, picking up a pair of strikeouts but fell to 1-5 on the season.
Mauro Luna relieved Solis in the sixth before
Justin Diaz tossed the final frame.
TAMIU got on the board in the fifth after
Mathew Trevino drove home
Ricky Gonzalez on an RBI single.
Down four runs, Trevino would bring the Dustdevils within two runs in the seventh with a double, plating Gonzalez and
Abel Aguilar.
GAME TWO: TAMIU 6 - NU 7
Game two saw the Dustdevils and Jets play 12 innings with clutch at-bats being the theme of the afternoon.
Hugo Mendiola got the start, tossing five and a third on the mound, striking out a pair of Jets.
Mark Trimble and
Coleman Butler would combine to toss the next five and two-thirds with Trimble fanning a batter while Butler picked up a pair of strikeouts.
Kyle Kieschnick fell to 1-6 after coming into the game in the bottom of the 12th when Newman scored the winning run.
The Dustdevils erased a two-run deficit in the second after
Abel Aguilar drove home Cesar Espinosa on an RBI double before Gonzalez drove home Aguilar on an RBI single.
TAMIU used three runs over the seventh and eighth inning to tie the game at five, forcing free baseball.
A wild pitch in the 10th allowed
Mario Ramirez to score and put the Dustdevils ahead 6-5.
Newman would tie the game in the bottom of the tenth and win the game with a run in the bottom of the 12th.
