OKLAHOMA CITY - Looking to continue their success in Heartland Conference play, Texas A&M International men's basketball (5-10, 2-2 HC) took down Oklahoma Christian (5-10, 0-4 HC) 58-53 to claim their second-straight conference victory.
TAMIU has now claimed three out of the last four match ups against OC, dating back to January 5, 2017. In the win, the Dustdevils also held Oklahoma Christian to their lowest point total of the season, and their lowest since January 27, 2018.
Reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Week Brent Finn led the Dustdevils with another massive performance, putting up 21 points with three assists, a rebound and a steal. Xabier Gomez also produced big numbers with 19 points, as well as two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Caleb Highley contributed a season-high 10 points in addition to six rebounds. Damon Leach was a force defensively, pulling down a season-high 13 rebounds, 11 of which were off the defensive glass.
In what was a tale of two halves, the Eagles went on a 18-3 run in the first half to take their largest lead of the game at 26-11 with just under seven minutes left in the half. TAMIU slowly began to chip away at the deficit, but OC still held 33-23 lead going into the intermission.
The Dustdevils came into the second half red hot, opening the period on a 12-0 run and taking a 35-33 lead just over five and a half minutes in. However, the Eagles found their footing again and counter punched to retake a slim 42-37 lead. TAMIU would not be denied, however, as a three-pointer from Danny Spinuzza put the Dustdevils up 46-43 with 8:46 left. While OC fought to regain the advantage, TAMIU held them off, never relinquishing the lead again and taking a 58-53 victory.
The Dustdevils look to continue their trend of success on this road trip on Saturday, Jan. 19 as they travel to Wichita, Kan. to face off against Newman (12-5, 3-2 HC).
