WICHITA, Kan. - Texas A&M International men's basketball (5-11, 2-3 HC) fell short to Newman (13-5, 4-2 HC) in a 65-52 decision on Saturday, snapping TAMIU's two-game win-streak.
Xabier Gomez led the Dustdevils with 15 points as well as five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Week Brent Finn posted 13 points with five steals, two rebounds and two assists. Damon Leach contributed eight rebounds.
The Jets took control of the game early, starting on a 9-3 run. They would extend their lead out to its largest of the half at 37-21. TAMIU tried to cut into to the deficit, but didn't find much success as NU held a 39-26 advantage going into the break.
At the start of the second half, Newman began to reassert their control as they pushed out to their largest lead of the game at 44-26, just two minutes into the period. However, the Dustdevils slowly found their footing and began to chip away at the lead. They managed to cut the deficit to six points at 48-42 with just under 11 minutes left and again at 53-47 with 5:16 left, but that would be as close as they got. The Jets eventually took the win 65-52.
TAMIU will return home for a three game conference homestand beginning on Thursday, Jan. 24 against University of Arkansas-Forth Smith at 7:30 p.m.
