Dustdevils collide with No. 5 Midwestern State in overtime thriller

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Texas A&M International University men's soccer (8-3-1, 4-1-0 LSC) faced a 3-2 overtime road setback against the No. 5 Midwestern State Mustangs (11-1-0, 5-0-0 LSC). 

Dustdevil midfielder Gabriel Arias fired the first shot of the match but sailed high in the 14th minute. 

The Mustangs broke the scoring ice in the 44th minute when Guilherme Martins finished a feed from Hikaruhito Meike that got past Dustdevil goalkeeper Josh Jones to send a 1-0 match into intermission. 

In the second half, TAMIU fought back as Ruben Nielsen found Steve Taylor for his first goal as a Dustdevil to knot the game at one apiece with 74:39 showing on the game clock. 

The Mustangs quickly responded 1:04 later when Carlos Flores passed it to Sebastian Venegas to give them a one-goal edge (2-1). 

Dustdevil forward Nadav Datner scored the dramatic equalizer that got by Mustang goalie, Taylor Lampe with only 59 seconds left in regulation to send the 2-2 match into overtime. 

Sergio Lara put the game away in the 106th minute with the game-winning goal past Jones.

Jones recorded four saves for TAMIU while Lampe made five stops to secure the win for Midwestern State. 

In the end, the Mustangs held the advantage in shots (19-13) and corner kicks (5-4). TAMIU and Midwestern both ended with seven shots on goal.
 
TAMIU concludes its six-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 26 with a Lone Star Conference matchup against Oklahoma Christian (4-7-0, 1-4-0 LSC).
