WICHITA FALLS, Texas -Â Texas A&M International volleyball (4-15, 2-10 LSC) knocked off Midwestern State (7-15, 4-8 LSC) in a thrilling 3-1 victory (25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday.
Once again, sophomore Mackenzie Catalina set a new career high with 22 kills to go along with eight digs, three blocks and a service ace. Senior Annie Deininger posted 10 kills, with two digs, two blocks and a service ace. Maison Kosse logged 40 assists with six digs, five service aces, three blocks and a kill. Senior Hannah Semon contributed 21 digs, with two assists.
TAMIU came out of the gates on fire, opening on a 6-0 run. The Mustangs battled back to tie things at 10-10, and took their first lead at 14-11 as part of a 7-1 run. The Dustdevils responded by retaking the lead at 16-15. TAMIU fought to hold MSU at bay, and won the set with a 25-23 decision.
The second set began the opposite of the first with the Mustangs tearing off a 9-1 run to start the frame. The Dustdevils battled and were able to trim the lead to 12-10. However, MSU pushed out again to a 20-14 run thanks to two sustained runs. They closed out the set on a 4-2 run for a 25-21 decision.
In the third set, both teams battled early, until TAMIU broke away with a 8-5 lead. The Mustangs would tie things at 11-11, but the Dustdevils countered with a 5-1 run to go up 16-12. TAMIU eventually claimed the set, finishing on a 8-2 run for a 25-17 decision.
MSU jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in the fourth set, only to see the Dustdevils tie it and take the advantage 7-6. A 7-3 run gave TAMIU a 15-11 lead. The Dustdevils would complete the upset by closing out the match on a 6-1 run for the 25-16 victory.
TAMIU will return home on Fri., Nov. 1 for a matchup against Eastern New Mexico at 6 p.m. Â
