No. 3 Dustdevils men’s soccer battles No. 2 Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference Championship semis

SAN ANTONIO – No. 3 Texas A&M International University men's soccer (12-6-1) dropped a 4-1 decision to the second-seeded Midwestern State Mustangs (14-4-0) in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Championship at Sigma Beta Chi Field in San Antonio, Texas on Friday evening.

The Mustangs broke the scoring ice 3:46 in when Sergio Lara finished a feed from Carlos Flores that got by Dustdevil goalkeeper Josh Jones.

Jones was tested again in the 11th minute of play and rejected a shot by Dylan Burke to hold the deficit at one.

LSC Freshman of the Year and LSC Forward of the Year Nadav Datner fired the first shot on goal for TAMIU but it was turned away by Mustang goalie, Taylor Lampe at the 29:31 mark.

The Mustangs extended their lead to a pair of goals (2-0) in the 38th minute as Julian Barajas lobbed a shot past Jones that ended up in the top right corner of the goal.

Ruben Nielsen attempted the final shot of the opening half with 54 seconds but the first-team All-LSC and All-Academic team honoree misfired the attempt as the ball rolled just left of the post to send the 2-0 match into intermission.

In the 50th minute, the Mustangs registered another goal when Juan Ramirez found Brandon Cerna to give Midwestern State a three-goal advantage (3-0).

Lara scored his second goal of the match in the 61st minute to extend Midwestern State's lead to 4-0.

TAMIU forward Steve Taylor found the back of the net in the 84th minute of play to cut their deficit back to three (4-1).

The Mustangs would ultimately hang on and settle the 4-1 victory.

Jones ended the match with four saves for TAMIU while Lampe turned away a pair of shots for Midwestern State.

In the end, the Mustangs held the advantage in shots (16-13) and shots on goal (8-3) while the Dustdevils led the way in corners (10-2).
