DALLAS -Â Texas A&M International volleyball (5-18, 3-13 LSC) fell in the regular season road finale to DBU (15-13, 7-9 LSC) in a heartbreaking five-set thriller (27-25, 16-25, 25-23, 20-25, 10-15) on Saturday.
Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils with a double-double of 19 kills and 19 digs, as well as a service ace and an assist. Sophomore Sammantha Herrera posted 10 kills to go along with two digs, a block and a service ace. Sophomore Maison Kosse logged 45 assists with six digs, three kills and a block. Senior Hannah Semon contributed 27 digs with four assists and a service ace.
DBU came out of the gate hot, as they opened on a 5-1 run. They held the lead for most of the set going up by as many as 21-13. However, TAMIU roared back with a 11-3 run to tie things at 24-24. From there, they took three of the final four points to take the first set 27-25.
Once again in the second set, the Patriots jumped out to an early lead at 3-1. This time though the Dustdevils were able to respond faster and tied things at 4-4. Things grew close for a few points until DBU ripped off a 13-3 run for a 19-10 lead. TAMIU was unable to climb out of that hole and the Patriots took the set 25-16.
In the third set, DBU took an early lead again at 5-2. The Dustdevils responded with a 12-3 run to take a 14-8 lead. The Patriots battled back to tie things at 21-21, but TAMIU took four of the final six points to take the frame 25-23.
The fourth set was tight to start with both teams trading points early. DBU began to break away with a 10-2 run to take a 14-6 lead. The Dustdevils attempted to mount a comeback and pulled within 22-20. However, the Patriots forced a deciding fifth set by taking the final three points for a 25-20 decision.
In the fifth set, both teams battled back and forth in the early goings. TAMIU was able to break away with a 8-5 lead. Unfortunately, DBU took the win by closing out the set on a 10-2 lead for the 15-10 victory.
The Dustdevils will return home for the final homestead of the season on Friday, Nov. 15 for a matchup against St. Edward's at 2 p.m.
