LACEY, Wash. – Texas A&M International women's basketball (4-4, 1-1 LSC) wrapped up its eight-game road trip Sunday evening with a 75-60 non-conference setback against the Saint Martin's Saints (3-2).
In the first quarter, TAMIU's Christine Ortega registered a quick four points on a pair of jump shots to give the Dustdevils an early two-point advantage (7-5) with 5:20 showing on the game clock.
Later in the quarter, TAMIU put together a 5-2 run that featured two baskets by Nicole Heyn including a layup to cap off the spurt that knotted the game at 14 apiece at the 2:00 mark.
Following the Heyn's basket, the Saints scored the final six points to close out the quarter to give SMU a 20-14 lead after the opening stanza.
In the second quarter, the Dustdevils tried to mount a comeback as they compiled eight consecutive points that featured back-to-back shots from beyond the arc by Heyn and the run was capped off by a pair of free throws by Julynne Da Silva Sa to tie the game at 24 with 6:34 left.
SMU's Janealle Sutterlict closed out the second quarter by converting on a three-point play to give the Saints a 36-32 lead at halftime.
In the first 4:32 of the third quarter, the Saints used a 12-2 run, including eight points by Bria Thames, to extend their lead to a dozen (48-36).
The Dustdevils closed out the third stanza by putting together a 8-4 spurt that was sparked by a three-point play by Lindsey Thorpe and was capped off on a shot from long distance by Josselin Geer to bring TAMIU within seven (56-49).
SMU began the fourth quarter strong as Mallory Vivola was responsible for their first six points, including a four-point play, en route to their second 12-2 run of the game. This helped extend their lead to 17 (68-51) with 4:50 left in the contest to help secure the 15-point victory.
For the Dustdevils, Heyn registered a game-high 19 points (7-of-13 FG) while putting together team highs of eight boards and five assists.
Vivola scored a team-high 17 points (6-of-16 FG, 4-of-9 3FG) for the Saints while both Thames (5-of-10 FG, 6-of-8 FT) and Sutterlict recorded double-doubles.
In the end, Texas A&M International shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field, 25 percent (6-of-24) from three-point range and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free-throw line while the Saints shot 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from the floor, 25 percent (5-of-20) from beyond the arc and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the charity stripe. The Saints held the advantage in rebounds (35-33), blocks (2-1), assists (21-13) and steals (15-9).
TAMIU opens up its home slate in Lone Star Conference play against Texas A&M-Kingsville (1-3, 0-2 LSC) on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m.
