LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International baseball (0-1) came up short in the season opener to Cameron (1-0) in a 2-0 decision in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.
In what was a pitcher's duel from the outset, the Dustdevils couldn't find the clutch hits to knock off the Aggies.Â
Going into the fourth inning, both starters had only given up a hit apiece. However, Ruben Solis walked the leadoff batter to start the inning, then plunked a batter to put runners at first and second with one out. With two outs, Trey Bigford found a hole for a base hit that scored the runner from second, taking a 1-0 lead. Jorge Napoles singled in the bottom half but was tagged at second in a fielder's choice from Nate Campos, who was picked off of first during the next batter.
Solis began the top of the fifth by hitting the leadoff batter. Jordan Harrison then singled to put two men on. The Dustdevils then got two quick out with a batter's interference and a foul out. However, Izrael Trevino knocked in Cameron's second run with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 2-0.Â
TAMIU had an opportunity to close the gap in the sixth as Andrew Holsey blasted a double and Anthony Handel drew a walk to put two men on with one out. However, back-to-back punch outs ended the threat, leaving both runners stranded.Â
The Dustdevils would get one more opportunity in the bottom of the seventh, as Phillip Sanchez would get a base hit with one out. Unfortunately, he would be left stranded as a foul out and a ground out would end the game.
Devin Castro would earn his first win of the season in the 2-0 victory, with Sean Maher picking up the save. Solis would suffer his first loss of the season.
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended after nine innings with the score tied 5-5. It will be concluded tomorrow at 12 p.m. with the third and final game of the series beginning 30 minutes after.Â
