Dustdevils split decisions in George and Ola McCorkle Challenge

SAN ANGELO, Texas - For the second consecutive day, Texas A&M International University softball (4-6) defeated Adams State University (0-6) but dropped the matchup with Angelo State University (7-1) in the Angelo State University George & Ola McCorkle Challenge.

Game 1: Texas A&M International 12, Adams State 4 (5 Inn.)

In the home half of the first inning, the Dustdevils put together a trio of runs off of Grizzlies starter Taylor Sandoval (L, 0-1: 4 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 3 BB). Lindsey Smith (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 3 R, 2 SB) slapped an RBI single to left field that scored Maya Paul (1-for-2, 3 R, 2 BB) for the game's first run. The following hitter, Briana Arredondo (3-for-4, 5 RBI) hit a single that platted home Smith and Morgan Chavarria (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 3 R, BB) to give TAMIU an early 3-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Rebecca Wood (1-for-4, HR, 4 RBI, R) reached on an error that scored an unearned run off of Dustdevils starter Sara Caterson (W, 1-2: 3.2 IP, 5 H, R, K) to bring Adams State within two runs (3-1).

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Maddison Schofield drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate home Melanie Gamboa (2-for-2, R). The next hitter, Smith smacked a two-run single to center field that scored Chavarria and Paul to extend the lead to five (6-1). Following the hit by Smith, Arredondo continued her big day at the plate by hitting a two RBI double that drove home Smith and Sumer Woodson to give TAMIU a comfortable 8-1 lead after four innings.

In the fifth inning, Adams State chipped away at the lead on a three-run home run by Wood to cut the advantage to four (8-4).

The Dustdevils quickly countered in the bottom of the fifth inning as RBI singles by Chavarria, Smith and Arredondo secured the 12-4 run-rule victory.

Smith and Arredondo finished the day with career-high RBI totals in a game with four and five respectively.

Game 2: Angelo State 16, Texas A&M International 8 (6 Inn.)

In the road half of the first inning, the Dustdevils tried to put together a two-out rally with back-to-back singles by Schofield (3-for-4, RBI) and Angel Jimenez however they were unable to capitalize and concluded the inning with no runs.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Rambelles scored eight runs off of Dustdevils starter Melanie Lint (L, 1-2: 0 IP, 8 ER, 5 H, 2 BB). Angelo State continued to pile on the runs in the opening frame and closed the inning with an early double-digit lead (10-0).

In the top of the third inning, Smith (1-for-3, 2 RBI, R) broke the scoring ice for TAMIU by smacking a two-run home run over the right field fence that platted home Paul (2-for-3, 2 R, BB) to cut the deficit to single digits (11-2). Later in the inning, Erin Mosley (1-for-2, RBI, R, 2 BB) drew a bases-loaded to bring the Dustdevils to within eight (11-3).

The following hitter, Alyssa Contreras reached on a fielder's choice that scored another run to make the score 11-4 in favor of the McCorkle Challenge host.

Mykayla Stroud responded for Angelo State by hitting a three-run home run, her second home run of the day, to regain a 10-run edge in the bottom of the third inning (14-4).

In the top of the fifth inning the Dustdevils attempted to mount a comeback as Melanie Gamboa hit a two-run single that platted home Mosley and Briana Cruz. Later in the inning, Schofield hit an RBI single to center field that scored Woodson. The following hitter, Chavarria reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Paul to touch home for their eighth total run (14-8).

Angelo State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 16-8 run-rule win.

The Dustdevils conclude the Angelo State University George & Ola McCorkle Challenge on Monday, February 11 with matchups against Adams State University (0-6) at 11 a.m. and Angelo State University (7-1) at 3:30 p.m. from Mayer Field in San Angelo, Texas.
