CLAREMORE, Okla. -Â Texas A&M International men's basketball (6-19, 3-11 HC) lost a heartbreaker 52-51 to Roger State (18-10, 7-7 HC) in the final regular season road game of the season.
Xabier Gomez paced the Dustdevils with 15 points as well as a rebound, an assist and a steal. Brent Finn posted 13 points with two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Damon Leach finished a point and a rebound shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Danny Spinuzza contributed seven points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
The first half was a tightly contested, back-and-forth affair that featured five lead changes and three ties. TAMIU took its first lead of the game at 4-2 and ran up a 10-3 run to take their largest lead of the game at 12-5 with 15:19 left in the half. However, the Hillcats battled back to take a 20-19 lead with just under 10 minutes left. They would hold this slim lead for the remainder of the period, taking a 34-28 lead into the break.
The Dustdevils came out of the intermission a little flat, as RSU was able to take their largest lead at 40-30 just six minutes into the second half. However, TAMIU found their footing and bounced back to trim the lead to a single point at 43-42. They kept fighting and tied the game at 50-50 with just 2:35 left. With 14 seconds left on the clock, Finn made a free throw to put the Dustdevils up 51-50. Unfortunately, the Hillcats would drive the floor on the ensuing possession and knock down a jump shot with four seconds remaining to take the 52-51 win.
TAMIU returns home for the final homestand of the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 27 as they play host to No. 5 St. Edward's at 7:30 p.m. The first 100 fans will receive free t-shirts as a part of the annual Set the Expectation game.
