Dustdevils Drop Doubleheader to UAFS

FORT SMITH, Ark. - Texas A&M International baseball (16-27, 7-10 HC) fell in a doubleheader to Arkansas-Fort Smith (23-16, 10-7 HC) on Friday.

GAME 1 - UAFS 3, TAMIU 0

The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel from start to finish. With both teams only getting five hits apiece.

The Lions got on the board first in the bottom of the second. The first run scored as a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. They took an early 2-0 lead during the next at-bat as a run scored on a passed ball.

The Dustdevils had their opportunity to get on the board in the top of the fourth as Adrian Castillo singled through the left side, followed by a Matthew Trevino single through the right side. Unfortunately, the inning was cut short as the next batter flied into a double play.

UAFS added their third run in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single to short, taking a 3-0 win.

Javon Rigsby (5-5, 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO) earned the win. Andrew Hernandez (4-4, 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 6 SO) took the loss.

GAME 2 - UAFS 9, TAMIU 6

The second game was the exact opposite of the first with both offenses coming alive.

The Lions got the board first again, scoring a run on a RBI double down the right field line. The Dustdevils responded with a run of their own in the third, as Daniel Espinosa scored reigning Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week Obi Obinwa on a fielder's choice.

TAMIU took is first lead of the day in the fourth as they tacked on another run off a RBI single to center, scoring Trevino and giving the Dustdevils a 2-1 lead. They pushed ahead with a 3-1 advantage in the fifth as Andrew Holsey scored on a sacrifice fly from Castillo.

Unfortunately, UAFS exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth, retaking taking the lead 7-3. Four runs scored on a grand slam to left center, with two more scoring on a RBI double and an error by the third baseman, respectively. They increased their lead to 9-3 in the sixth off a two run shot.

The Dustdevils tried to mount a comeback in the seventh as they scored three runs. Holsey scored on a RBI double to left center from Jorge Napoles. Anthony Handel scored on a sacrifice fly, with Napoles scoring on a RBI single by Trevino. However, the comeback would come up short as they were unable to push across any more runs in the final two frames, giving the Lions the 9-6 victory.

Korbin Polly (3-0, 5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO) earned the win, with Foster Pace (4) earning the save. Andrew Pavon (3-2, 4.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) took the loss.

TAMIU will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow as the two teams face off in the road series finale.
