LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International baseball (12-22, 3-5 HC) won its first Heartland Conference series of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Newman (13-18, 1-7 HC) on Friday.
GAME 1 - TAMIU 1, NU 0
The first game of the day was an old-fashioned pitchers' duel, as neither team was able to push across a run in the first seven innings and force it into extra innings.Â
Both teams had opportunities to score throughout the game with the Dustdevils racking up eight hits and leaving five runners stranded, while the Jets had six hits and left nine runners stranded.
Adrian Castillo finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth as he launched a pitch over the left field wall on a 1-1 count to grab the 1-0 victory with a walk-off bomb.
J.J. Sanchez (1-0, 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) earned his first win of the season in the victory. Jacob Stramel (0-2, 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) took the loss.
GAME 2 - TAMIU 11, NU 2
If the first game was a pitcher's duel, the second was the exact opposite with TAMIU scoring in all but one inning.
Matthew Rosales got things started by reaching first on an error by the third baseman and scoring Andrew Holsey to take an early 1-0 lead. The Dustdevils tacked on a second run in the second inning as Phillip Sanchez led off with a solo shot over the left field fence. Anthony Handel pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third as he stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.Â
Newman finally got their first run of the day in the fourth as a double to center scored a run from first to cut the lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, TAMIU exploded for four runs. Castillo drove in Holsey with a sacrifice fly. Handel scored on a wild pitch. Matthew Trevino joined in on the fun with a two-run home run to right center, scoring Rosales to take a 7-1 lead.
The Jets pushed across their final run in the sixth as a RBI double scored a run from second to trim the lead to 7-2.
Once again the Dustdevils responded with four more runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Holsey drove in Obi Obinwa with a single to center. Jorge Napoles scored Holsey with a RBI single through the 5-6 hole. With a two RBI single to left center, Rosales brought home Napoles and Handel to seal the 11-2 victory.
Andrew Pavon (3-1, 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) earned the win. Derek Schumann (2-2, 4.1 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) took the loss.
