TAMIU Claims Series Sweep In Finale Over Newman

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International baseball (13-22, 4-5 HC) claimed its first Heartland Conference series sweep since 2016 with a 8-7 victory over Newman (13-22, 4-5 HC) on Saturday.

TAMIU got things started in the bottom of the second as Daniel Espinoza blasted a two RBI triple to right center to score Obi Obinwa and Matthew Trevino. Anthony Handel followed with a RBI double to the right field corner, scoring Espinoza. A RBI single from Jorge Napoles scored Handel to give the Dustdevils an early 4-0 lead.

The Jets fought back in the top of the fourth cutting the lead to 4-3. One run came in on a bases loaded walk, with two runs scoring on a two RBI single to left center.

TAMIU responded in the bottom half with two runs to push the lead back out to 6-3. Napoles brought home Handel with a RBI single to right center. Matthew Rosales scored Napoles with a RBI single of his own up the middle.

NU got a run back in the fifth on a RBI fielder's choice to pull within two at 6-4. However, in the bottom half the Dustdevils would push back out to an 8-4 advantage. Espinoza let loose on a solo bomb over the right center field wall. A RBI double to left center from Napoles scored Andrew Holsey.

The Jets added another run in the sixth on a RBI single, and got two more in the eighth on RBI double down the right field line and a wild pitch to pull within one run 8-7.

Justin Diaz would slam the door in the top of ninth, pitching a perfect inning to retire the side and seal the 8-7 victory.

Ruben Solis (1-7, 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) earned his first win of the season, with Diaz (1) earning his first save of the season. Zack Erdman (3-3, 1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) took the loss.

The Dustdevils will be back in action on Thursday, April 11 as they travel to San Antonio, Texas for a road series against St. Mary's.
